Obituary of Wilmer Garnet Hornseth

Please share a memory of Wilmer to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Wilmer Garnet Hornseth left this earth with incredible grace and peace at Pineview Lodge on Sunday, July 2, 2017.

Wilmer was born April 23, 1923, at home 2 miles east of Nipawin to homesteaders Siguard and Leah Hornseth.  This home was later moved to the Nipawin & District Living Forestry Museum site and remains there to this day.

From a very young age, he loved farming and horses.  He worked on the family farm until adulthood.  At the age of 22, Wilmer met the love of his life and later married June Grace Catherine Scott on December 17, 1947.  In 1951, June and Wilmer welcomed their firstborn, Lorraine Karen, into this world and later, in 1953, Cheryl Dawn came along.  They later bought a farm east of Nipawin and built their new home and farmed there until retirement when they moved to Nipawin.

As a community member, Wilmer was involved in and served on several committees, namely, Canadian Seed Growers Assoc., Nipawin 4-H Riding Club, and the Nipawin Fair Board.  He grew elite seed plots for 30 years as well.  His hobby, other than farming, was raising and showing quarter horses for many years.

Wilmer was a member of the Nipawin Apostolic Church all of his adult life.  He helped build the new church and a new manse.  He served on the Church Board and served as an usher for many years.  Wilmer had a beautiful tenor voice and sang many duets with his wife, June.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, June; his parents, Siguard & Leah Hornseth; his brothers, Clifford, Keith, Lloyd and Stanley Hornseth.

His surviving family members are two daughters, Lorraine (Waine) White and Cheryl Niichel; 5 grandchildren, Scott White (Annette Lacey), Darla (Joe) Giesbrecht, Robert (Carmen) Niichel, Andrew (Carly) Niichel, and Maria (Billy Coble) Niichel; 5 great-grandchildren (Bryce, Leslie, Justin, Kevin, Kate, Calvin and Richard Leo); sister, Eileen (Brian) Tebbutt Lee; sister-in-laws, Mavis Hornseth and Mary Hornseth; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Wilmer’s presence, smile, and positive attitude will be sorely missed.
