Obituary of Linda Scott
Please share a memory of Linda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Linda was born in Nipawin, the 8th child of George Scott and Jennie Leora (ORA) (Collison) Scott. Linda’s father lost his life accidentally when Linda was 2 years old, yet she always felt a special bond with him. She was mentally challenged, and in the 1950’s there were no provisions for such a handicap at the local school in White Fox. Her mother, Ora Scott, brought Linda to special education schools in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince George, B.C. because Linda desperately wanted to learn to read and write- but it was not to be.
In her adult years, Linda worked in a closed workshop in Moose Jaw, and when Ora moved to Nipawin in 1988, Linda was welcomed at Handiworks. There she was proud to have a job. She was an expert at making coffee. She greeted everyone by name - her memory for faces and names seldom failed her.
Her family of 3 brothers and 3 sisters; Gene Scott, Ina Schoonover, Yvonne Couldwell, Marguerite Soucy, Jack Scott and Torall Scott along their spouses and children, were important in Linda’s life, and her mother Ora, made sure that Linda knew only love and acceptance. Christmas and birthday celebrations were highlights of her life. As well, Linda always looked forward to her annual summer holiday at Camp Thunderbird by Candle Lake organized by Handiworks.
In 1995, Ora was no longer able to care for Linda, So Dianna and Irving Quiring made a new home for Linda with them as she continued her job at Handiworks. Linda soon learned to love her new home and family.
Although she never learned the words to songs, Linda could carry a tune and had a nice singing voice. She liked to sing in the United Church Choir in Nipawin when she was able. How she loved music! She enjoyed life and found humor in everyday events, ‘slip-ups’, and slap stick comedy. Linda is laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery with her mom and dad. May she rest in peace.
Linda is predeceased by her parents, George and Ora Scott; sister, Winona (as a child); brothers, Gene Scott and Torall Scott; Brothers-in-law, Herb Couldwell, Lyle Schoonover, and Richard Soucy; Sisters-in-law, Gerri Scott, Gen Scott, and Margaret Scott (Jack); and Great Niece, Madison Scott.
Linda is survived by her sisters, Ina Schoonover, Yvonne Couldwell, and Marguerite Soucy; brother, Jack Scott; Sister-in-law, Pat Scott (Torall); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and Linda’s care givers for thirty years, Dianna and Irving Quiring.
