Obituary of Ethel Fuchs

   Ethel Irene Fuchs was born in the Nipawin Hospital. She was the 11th of the 14 children born to Joseph and Gertrude Fuchs.

   She grew up on the homestead in the Petaigen district, 13 miles north of Carrot River, where she attended the Petaigen School, a one room schoolhouse which was the first school to be built in the district.

   Ethel lived her entire life on the original homestead. After watching all her siblings leave home to build lives of their own, Ethel remained at home, helping her dad farm and caring for her parents well into their senior years. After her dad passed away, Ethel and her brother, Rudy, farmed the homestead in a partnership arrangement. When Rudy retired, Ethel continued to farm on her own for a few years before turning the farming operations over to her nephew Grant.

   Ethel loved that homestead dearly and with the assistance of family, neighbours, and regular homecare visits, she was very proud to have stayed there until the age of 92. Failing health prompted a move into the Carrot River special care home where she resided at the time of her passing.

   Ethel was a dedicated, hardworking, and passionate farmer. As a lifelong resident of the Petaigen district, Ethel was well known and respected by her neighbours, and always willing to lend a hand to friends, family, and neighbours.

   Ethel was truly one of a kind. She lived a simple and somewhat solitary life. She wasn’t always comfortable meeting new people so if you were in her circle of friends, you were truly blessed.

   Ethel was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Gertrude Fuchs, brothers Joseph (in infancy), Rudy, Walt, Ed, Joe and Alf; sisters Charlotte Helstein, Nora Evans, Isabelle Reynolds, Margaret Pitchko and Katherine Wolowski; nieces Trina Kiteley, Gloria Forbes and Sherry Reynolds; nephews Blair Pomeroy and Eddie Fuchs; five great nephews and one great niece.

   Ethel will be fondly remembered by sisters Julia Pomeroy and Lillian Fluter, a multitude of nieces, nephews and their extended families and friends, including a few precious lifelong friends and neighbours.

   Ethel’s family would like to thank the teams at both the Carrot River Special Care Home and the Home Care service for the assistance and kindness shown to her.

   Special acknowledgement to “Ethel’s girls”, Jennifer and Courtney, who provided not only exemplary home health care services but showered Ethel with kindness, friendship and encouragement over the past few years.
