Obituary of Elsie Mazurek

Please share a memory of Elsie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Elsie was born in 1927 in Lublin, Poland to Stanislaw and Marianna Novogrodski. At the age of 2, she travelled with her sister Wanda and her mom on the SS Montcalm to Canada. She attended Blue Jay School in Carrot River only up to grade 6. She helped her parents on the farm with the daily chores. On October 9th, 1944, Elsie married her soulmate John Mazurek and they spent the next 67 years together on the family farm. John passed away in July 2012. Elsie’s favorite pastime was her vegetable and flower gardens. In those gardens, not a weed was to be found. She spent hours in the gardens. She took great pride in her gardens which provided a huge assortment of vegetables and fruit. Mom always shared her bountiful harvests with her family, friends and neighbours. Every year she made a huge assortment of pickles, juices, condiments, canned fruits, jams, soups and froze vegetables for the long winters. Mom always made fresh bread, buns, and pastries. The fresh bread went well with the freshly churned butter and homemade jams. Perogies and cabbage rolls were always a staple in the house. She made the best jelly rolls and borscht as well. Visitors to the farm never left without a coffee and a bite to eat. In the later years, many winters found Elsie and John touring Vancouver Island. They also enjoyed many trips driving through the United States. In the fall time, Elsie and John would make quick trips to British Columbia to pick up fresh fruit always returning home to give most of it away to family. Elsie is survived by her Daughters: Jennifer (Vern) Ulvick, Gayle (Lorne) Moffat; Daughter-In-Law: Jean Mazurek; Grandchildren: Sheldon Thibault, Debra Ulvick, Brad Mazurek, Kevin Mazurek (Tanya), Darla Bouvier (Moe), Tyler Moffat (Lana), Jason Rediger (Sierra), Angela Rediger; Great grandchildren: Ethan MacDonald, Allie MacDonald, Kaebry Moffat, Karsyn Moffat, Tucker Moffat, Tommy Croall, Bennett Croall, Saffrin Mazurek, Sean Mazurek, Ian Rediger, Preston Rediger, Emily Bouvier, Maddy Turbett; Sister: Helene Rogowski; and brother: Stan Novogrodski; And numerous nieces and nephews and their families. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at the Victoria Union Hospital for the excellent care given to Elsie in her final days. Mom’s passing was not related to the novel coronavirus; she passed peacefully at the age of 93 after suffering a stroke. “Her Spirit Will Live On!”
