Elsie was born in 1927 in Lublin, Poland to Stanislaw and Marianna Novogrodski. At the age of 2, she travelled with her sister Wanda and her mom on the SS Montcalm to Canada. She attended Blue Jay School in Carrot River only up to grade 6. She helped her parents on the farm with the daily chores. On October 9th, 1944, Elsie married her soulmate John Mazurek and they spent the next 67 years together on the family farm. John passed away in July 2012.
Elsie’s favorite pastime was her vegetable and flower gardens. In those gardens, not a weed was to be found. She spent hours in the gardens. She took great pride in her gardens which provided a huge assortment of vegetables and fruit. Mom always shared her bountiful harvests with her family, friends and neighbours. Every year she made a huge assortment of pickles, juices, condiments, canned fruits, jams, soups and froze vegetables for the long winters. Mom always made fresh bread, buns, and pastries. The fresh bread went well with the freshly churned butter and homemade jams.
Perogies and cabbage rolls were always a staple in the house. She made the best jelly rolls and borscht as well. Visitors to the farm never left without a coffee and a bite to eat. In the later years, many winters found Elsie and John touring Vancouver Island. They also enjoyed many trips driving through the United States. In the fall time, Elsie and John would make quick trips to British Columbia to pick up fresh fruit always returning home to give most of it away to family.
