Obituary of Bertha Stella Annie Meyer

(Betty) Bertha Stella Annie Meyer (nee Fowlie) was born on the family farm in the Megan District, 5 miles east of Arborfield on May 2, 1925, and passed away on December 1, 2016.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Fowlie, and by her older sister and brother (Mary and Jim) and her younger brother (Bill).

Following completion of high school in Arborfield, she attended Normal School in Saskatoon. After this, she taught school for a year in Luing, a country school east of Nipawin. Betty married Fred on October 16, 1944, and they remained devoted to one another until Fred’s death in 1986. They established their farm southeast of Carrot River in the Grassy Run School District and operated it together for 40 years.

Betty is survived by her children: David, Donna, Ellen, and Ian. Betty was a loving grandmother to Cherie, Shaun, Adam, Tanya, Lisa, Taran, and Liam; and loving great grandmother to Domini, Ebony, Nicholas, Audrey, Brynn, Graysen, Winston, Stella, English, Jack, Zenna, and Beckham. She was also devoted to all the other members of her far-flung family and constantly sent out cards for every occasion.

Over the last decades of her life, Betty traveled widely. This included several seniors bus tours to the United States. As well, in 1994 and 2005 she traveled with her daughters, Donna and Ellen, and niece, Judy Fowlie, to Scotland. Once there, she visited cousins in Aberdeen. On another occasion, she traveled with her sister-in-law, Lillian Fowlie, to Australia where they were hosted by her nephew, Jim Fowlie. Betty loved hosting holiday meals and social gatherings. She was passionate about her hobbies and proudly displayed her artistic talents in the completion of many needle points, petti-point, and quilting projects that we will all cherish. She challenged herself with many hours on the golf course and as a senior overcame her fear of water by learning to swim. Another of her interests was to follow the World Series each fall.

Betty was a pillar of the local community as an active member of the Jordan River Ladies Club, the Carrot River United Church Women’s Group, the Carrot River Horticultural Society, and as a local tourism volunteer. Her horticultural skills shone in the carefully tended flower beds, shrubs, and trees of her farmyard.
