Obituary of Mary Seaman
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Eda Seaman on August 28, 2023.
The only child of Tom and Cis (Eliza) Edwards, Mary was born on September 8, 1926 in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan. Four years later, they moved north to settle on a farm in the Kelsey district between Choiceland and Garrick. It was here that Mary attended school and where she met the love of her life, Harry Seaman, who she married in 1947. Two daughters (Linda in 1948 and Eda in 1953) soon followed.
From her early childhood until she retired, Mary lived on the farm. Like so many women of her generation, Mary contributed in numerous ways to the functioning of the family farm. She simply loved spending her time outdoors tending to her flowers, picking berries, or working in the vegetable garden. Every spring she would plant a large garden, and every fall store or preserve her harvest. Along the way, she exhibited a keen business sense by turning her passion for plants into a successful commercial greenhouse, selling bedding plants throughout northeastern Saskatchewan. From 1966 to 1981 Mary managed the Garrick Co-op. And when not working, Mary enjoyed curling and the annual fishing trips she took with Harry and their friends. Many winters were spent making moosehide mitts. However, her most endearing quality was the generosity with which she afforded everyone. Nobody was ever allowed to leave the yard without having a cup of tea, being invited into her home for a meal, or taking some fresh vegetables home. It was her way of connecting with those around her.
Her memory will be carried on by her two daughters: Linda Scott and Eda (Kim) Wilburn; four grandchildren: Robbie Scott, Clint (Marie) Wilburn, Christine (Rick) Black, Cathie (Colin) Willness; seven great grandchildren: Delane (Carmen) Wilburn, Morgan (Adam) Betteridge, Spencer Black, Lane (Demi) Wilburn, Whitney Willness, Cori Willness, Callie (Jordan) Willness; and, three great-great grandchildren: Elsie Willness, Oakley Wilburn, and Jeannie Wilburn.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Tom and Cis Edwards; her husband, Harry Seaman; her son-in-law, John Scott; and two grandsons, Joe and Gary Scott.
