Obituary of Robert Leo Kirkness

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert Leo Kirkness was born on December 15, 1940, to parents Rose Ann and Bill in Kelvington, SK.  Bob loved spending time with his brother Russell and his family.  Bob worked as a farm hand in Chelan and Margo, SK and numerous other places, before moving to Toronto to join the army.  After a short time in the army, Bob took up trucking.  It was while he was in Toronto that Bob met the love of his life, Martha Fortune.

In the spring of 1971, Bob and Martha decided to take a holiday to the West Coast.  On their travels, they made a stop in Nipawin to visit Bob’s mother, whose health was poor at the time.  Bob and Martha made the decision to not travel to the West Coast, but to stay and take care of his mom. Bob was always a “Mama’s Boy” and until she passed away, she was never too far away.  Nipawin became their home.

Bob took on various jobs, from concrete work to being a farm hand to working for the Town of Nipawin, where he worked for 21 years.

In 1997 Bob joined the Nipawin Lions Club and was a very active member, involved in countless community events including the annual trade fair and the Red Cross Blood Clinic.  Bob also enjoyed farming, volunteering at the museum, camping, hunting and his precious dog Princess.  He especially enjoyed his weekend fishing trips, exploring new lakes and spending time with family.

He will be missed dearly by his family, friends and his Nipawin Lions Club family.

Bob was predeceased by his wife Martha, mother Rose Ann Keller, father Bill Kirkness, brothers Lawrence, Stanley, Russell and sister Bertha. He is survived by his stepson Bernard(Elaine), brothers Johnny and Archie, sisters Lotty and Dorothy, sister-in-law Mary, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
